2012 Fall Career Fair Summary Executive Summary: Student participation in the annual fall career fair continues to decrease at a rapid pace despite increased marketing. The College of Basic and Applied Science had the most students followed by Jones College of Business, 31.3% and 25.8% respectively. Employer participation was down by one from 120 to 119. The staff made multiple attempts and follow-up phone calls to get the employer registrations up to this number. There was a good diversity and quality of employers attending this year. The top two ways students found out about the fair was from faculty (30.4%) and email (18.7%). This report contains the following sections: A. Students should be better prepared. Good introduction means a lot. We also like to see a passion for our company and knowledge of what we do. 2. Student’s participation for class credit only. 3. Had previously registered and did not go through (for online registration process). Why so high (on registration)? Group airlines near each other, especially Delta & ExpressJet. GF Options (on food). Not enough dressed up (on first impression of students). 4. The students were not all well dressed for a professional event. Liked [that] there was lunch and breakfast. 5. Parking was good but getting goods into the building was difficult. 6. Lot was full. Not blocked off – no attendant to give parking passes. 7. Student volume was pretty low compared with other career fairs. Students, overall, did not seem to be prepared or professional. 8. Everything is excellent except price is a little too high. We always do well at MTSU! 9. This is the only one {career fair] we come to! Just MTSU! 10. Room temperature could have been warmer. Thank you!! 11. Most students looking for part-time hourly work or pursuing job outside of degree (e.g., Geology, Anthropology, etc.) no experience in field, or looking for “any job.” Image of students – lacking professional attire. 12. Given the size of your aviation department, I felt like the turnout for pilots was low. The event is one of the more expensive we attend. I’d like to return for classroom visits and a presentation focused on an instructor audience who more closely meets our hiring minimums. 13. Traffic for the career fair was very slow – would’ve liked to have seen more students. Many students not dressed professionally. Very little interaction with career center staff or other MTSU staff (in comparison to other schools). 14. Best year candidate wise, by far. Love the new time frame, 10-2. 15. Wish there were more applicants; multiple candidates seem to just walk by, too nervous to speak. 16. Help students prepare for job fair – dress, introductions, resume. 17. Students in general were not prepared for the fair. Nearly all students we spoke with had virtually no knowledge of the company. Some were not dressed appropriately (suit). We have previously visited the MTSU Career Fair and plan to do so in the future. We would be happy to help students prepare for these events if the campus was interested in leveraging us. 18. More teacher/professor involvement in urging students to attend the career fair. 19. More students coming through. 20. Need better format training [on resumes]. 21. Require the students to dress business professional and to bring resumes. We were on the back side where it was relatively empty compared to the other side. I feel like you need a way to draw the students around the entire event. 22. Flow still wasn’t what I would have expected. Needed more traffic and viable candidates. Business administration/management is broard would have expected more. [????] 23. The students were incredibly unprepared. 24. Water/drinks need to be easily accessible. Very disappointed in professionalism (dress/appearance) of students. Maybe more marketing to get more students to attend the career fair. 25. It would be nice if the freshmen coming in would dress in business casual even if just for extra credit in a class. 26. Shorter time period. More alumni participation. 27. It seemed that more awareness of the event to 3rd/4th year students would have increased turnout. Overall, good event and will participate again. 28. Keep up the great work! 29. Students need more internships, especially in the IT space. 30. Wish there was more student traffic and students were more prepared. Thank you! Career Services is great. 31. The student participation was light. 32. This is our first time to attend the MTSU fair and were disappointed on the number of students to attend. We were also published as EL/EX [entry level, experienced hire] when we’re primarily looking for internships so not sure what happened there. 33. The elder man in the parking lot was no help. He told us we could not pull closer to the building to unload yet when we drug our materials to the elevator, there was clearly a street that lead right up to the loading dock & elevator. Having students present in the parking lot to help would have been nice. Registration was a big laborious [process] due to registration on the “Lightning JobSource.” A separate registration for this event would have been nice since we are not an employment agency. We did no [not] receive the email confirmation or info. That was sent out. You asked for those attending and requested email address [es] – Please include those folks in your communique. 2. Is there a student union or somewhere on campus for students to gather? If so, that would probably be a better location. Even somewhere close to a library might be better. 3. Very well organized. Thank you for the invitation. 4. A graduate school career fair as day 2 of 2 in career fair option would be ideal (day 1 of 2). 2012 Career Fair Summary Page 9 of 16 E. Variety of companies in major; some company representatives did not say much even though I was interacting. Like the amount of employers Prefer more major-oriented businesses, part-time position available from companies, less sales positions More graduate schools maybe Not enough careers in manufacturing Excellent set-up organizations were visible Thanks N/A Great organization. Employers easy to talk to, but directed me to their websites. I enjoyed that there were many job opportunities. I would like to see more insurance Companies for my major. Pretty good I didn’t really find it that beneficial because there wasn’t anybody here to talk to me about aerospace admin side. Very eye opening, the only I wish I would have saw is more Airline/Aeronautical companies Good Work Great job I liked everything and everyone. Hope it could come twice a semester. The many aerospace companies that were here. Flight schools recruiting certified Flight Instructors. The more Airlines the better! Need people from Aerospace maintained I would like to see more aviation-related businesses Great Variety of Employers Very nice people and very informative Helping me find a job I like that the fair provided helpful information I previously didn’t know about. Some stations did not have good organization, but overall it was a good experience There weren’t enough healthcare tables. If it involved health it was more business based. The information I received was very relevant to my major. I loved that the booths really want to talk to us and I really learned a lot. I like how they know other backgrounds. There should be more medical school resources. There are no science affiliated companies-was disappointed. Tons of information It was organized and very helpful 2012 Career Fair Summary Page 12 of 16 I liked that each business was very professional and helpful. Organized There weren’t many booths on Chemistry. Pretty good not very appealing to the eye Not many jobs in the science fields except medical Opportunity to speak with recruiters in person I liked the variety of companies and schools present Need broader array of jobs. I truly enjoyed this career fair, very informative. I would like to see more employers in my degree, but the fair was great over-all. Everything! The fair was well set up and well organized. I wish there had been more stuff for a biology major. More responded, more opportunities The setup was kinda off to find businesses. If they were organized by name, that would be cool. Friendly, talkative people. Free beverages for people around. Great entry level openings for computer science well laid out More Agriculture/Environmental area employers. So many businesses! 2012 Student Survey Comments – Behavioral and Health Sciences I appreciated how the career fair map listed what the groups were looking for and what majors were relevant. I think it was perfect!! It's a lot of choices All of the healthcare companies were recruiting for IT jobs There is a lot here for business majors. For people of my field there was nothing to attain. I liked the variety of career choices. I had a lot of fun. Would like more options for exercise science majors There were more jobs available this year More Booths I liked the amount of healthcare related information/businesses. I think the fair needed no improvement I loved it Very insightful Didn’t see anything really for my major, also their people were really nice Needs more TXMD booths for fashion, merchandising, design Bring more TXMD majors. It was organized well, all organizations were welcoming! It was great Very helpful Nothing I like how they know exactly what major to look for in all areas of jobs & they were very helpful. If I’m not a visa holder I would find the job I want. So I’m going somewhere else to find more part-time jobs I liked the variety but it would be helpful to have other medical degree areas. All of the graduate programs Nice set-up. 2012 Career Fair Summary Page 13 of 16 BSI has earned a TERRIBLE reputation because they’re purposely misleading applicants. It’s a door to door commission only sales job. It was nice, but I spent more time looking down at the paper looking lost than talking with people More Psychology jobs/internships 2012 Student Survey Comments – College of Business Comments I liked the people and they are all interesting in help people and moving their business forward. Extremely helpful kiosk reps-needs more marketing. There were a lot of jobs/companies with opportunities, but I would like to see more international oriented jobs or opportunities Good range of companies, great lay-out. More liberal Arts job opportunities present would be nice Maybe more diversity in the sense of part time jobs Accessibility No real positions for Liberal Arts Degree, especially not Global Studies Law schools – more greon business 2012 Student Survey Comments – College of Mass Comm Lots of variety Great layout More companies for broadcasting in sports media I like exploring and learning about different types of pls. If vendors could stay the entire length it would be helpful More options for what you plan to get your degree in. Too much marketing and sales, not enough variety. 2012 Career Fair Summary Page 15 of 16 More PR –Related Companies # of companies representedNo rep present for State Farm Nice turnout, was impressed to see Great Lakes Airlines here None Not enough jobs/companies for enough majors. Plenty of sales and insurance, quite a few for pilots. Otherwise not much else. Needs more grad schools as well. None It would help to have a broader selection of companies, specifically TV and audio production. It was nice. I liked most the fact that even though I never considered going to TSU, the representative still gave me much needed information for my career Everything. I thought some people were rude. For students who need it, it would be nice if there were more part-time job “stations” None Easy to navigate As a music major, there weren’t any organizations that were music or art-related 2012 Student Survey Comments – University College So many voutres of companies Informative It was a good experience.
